A committment to Excellence

Originally from Maryland, Dr. Hatef’s path to neurological surgery began at the University of Virginia where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. From there, he went to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina for medical school. Although education seemed to be bringing him farther South, the matching system for residency had other plans, and he began training in neurological surgery at Ohio State University. Today he provides the full breadth of neurosurgical services for his patients in the Mt. Carmel Health System.

Dr. Hatef is committed to providing care at the highest levels in all aspects of neurosurgery. His particular interests include brain tumors, vascular conditions of the brain and spine, carotid artery stenosis, peripheral nerve surgery, and all aspects of spinal neurosurgery. During his training, in addition to the required training in spinal surgery, he elected to complete two enfolded fellowships in spine surgery: he spent one year at Nationwide Children’s Hospital honing skills in treating pediatric and adolescent spinal deformities including scoliosis, and he spend a second year at Ohio State University receiving additional training in correcting spinal deformities in adults.

He is one of the few spine surgeons to have training in both neurosurgical and orthopedic spine surgery. Additionally, he is one of the few neurosurgeons in Columbus in the prestigious Scoliosis Research Society, a nationwide organization dedicated to improving care for patients with spinal deformities.

Dr. Hatef is an active participant in medical research, having published more than 15 peer-reviewed publications on topics including spine deformity, chiari malformation, medicolegal issues in neurosurgery, medical education, pediatric scoliosis, spinal tumors, and neuromodulation. He is a reviewer for multiple major medical journals and has been invited faculty to discuss his research at national conferences.

In his personal life, Dr. Hatef is an avid reader and amateur cook. His wife is a radiologist at a local community hospital, and they have two children.
